Woman sues eye doctor for botched surgery

CHARLESTON - A former patient of Dr. R. David Allara is suing the physician after he performed refractive surgery on her.
Sherry Dew and her husband Stephen Dew filed a suit Feb. 5 in Kanawha Circuit Court, claiming Allara did not properly examine her eye before her surgery and failed to exercise the proper degree of care.
The suit states Sherry Dew wore glasses for 40 years and contacts for 20 years, and "has an increasing desire to stop wearing glasses."
Allara performed refractive surgery on Dew on Dec. 4, 2003, and continued to treat her until June 12, 2006, when he referred her to another ophthalmologist.
The suit says the care administered to Dew was wrong in several ways, including a failure to determine corneal residual thickness and an inadequate preoperative examination, which would have revealed an astigmatism.
As a result of the negligence of Allara, Dew "suffered damage to her eyes and will require a corneal transplant."
The Dews seek compensation against Allara, for injuries and damages. They seek a trial by jury.
Attorney Larry O. Ford is representing the Dews, and the case has been assigned to Judge Tod Kaufman.
