CHARLESTON - A Texas couple has filed an asbestos lawsuit against 39 companies, including four that have done or continue to do business in Kanawha County.

William and Carmel Bradbury of The Woodlands, Texas, filed a suit Aug. 14 in Kanawha Circuit Court through attorney Brian Alan Prim.

The suit claims William Bradbury was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma June 8, 2007. Bradbury, 76, claims he was exposed to asbestos in West Virginia, which contributed to his mesothelioma, which is cancer on the outer lining of the lung, which is both fatal and incurable.

Bradbury worked from 1957 to 1991 at Union Carbide Corporation in Charleston. Prior to that, he worked at the Hercules Powder Company in Savannah, Ga., from 1948 to 1953.

The West Virginia companies named in the suit are: Nitro Industrial Coverings Inc., Famous Supply Company, Union Boiler Company and Vimasco Corporation.

In the 10-count suit, Bradbury claims he has sustained severe illness and injury, which forced him to get medical treatment. The treatment resulted in medical bills for the doctor, hospital and medications.

According to the suit, Bradbury's enjoyment of life is also impaired and significantly shortened.

Carmel Bradbury claims she has lost the general services, companionship and society of her husband. She has also been giving her husband nursing services.

William and Carmel Bradbury seek compensatory and punitive damages as well as any other relief the court deems necessary.

The case will be assigned to a visiting judge.
