Woman says doctor failed to diagnose breast cancer

CHARLESTON - A Kanawha County woman has filed a suit against a physician, claiming the doctor failed to diagnose a mass in her right breast, which ultimately was found to be metastatic breast cancer.
Jacqueline Bowling, and her husband Richard, filed the suit Feb. 14 in Kanawha Circuit Court against Marsha F. Granese, M.D., an OB/GYN in Kanawha County.
According to the suit, Jacqueline Bowling went to Granese on March 1, 2004, for monitoring and testing of a mass in her right breast.
"Granese failed to inform Bowling of the possibility that the right breast mass complained of by Jacqueline Bowling was a malignant tumor and of the need for follow-up care and treatment," the suit says.
According to the suit, Granese was aware of the existence of the mass in Bowling's right breast throughout her pregnancy.
Bowling claims the mass increased in size during her pregnancy, and in May 2005, she was referred for testing which led to the diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer. Bowling underwent surgery that appeared to have removed all of the cancer.
According to the suit, Bowling claims she was severely injured by the delay in the diagnosis and treatment of her mass.
Bowling claims Granese failed to inform her of the potential for cancer during her March 2004 visit, failed to perform follow-up testing and failed to arrange for evaluation and studies to diagnose the cancer.
Bowling claims she suffered serious bodily injury, disfigurement and deformities, medical care and costs and will suffer humiliation and embarrassment.
Richard Bowling claims he has sustained great and irreparable loss of comfort, society, convenience and consortium from his wife.
The Bowlings seek compensatory damages as allowed under the Medical Professional Liability Act, plus other relief they may be entitled to receive.
Attorney Richard D. Lindsay is representing the Bowlings. The case has been assigned to Judge James Stucky.
