Whittaker business sued for not paying gas bill

WINFIELD - A business owned by Powerball winner Jack Whittaker is being sued in Putnam Circuit Court.
Whittaker LLC, LLC is the defendant in a lawsuit filed May 7 by Union Oil & Gas Inc. Whittaker LLC owned and operated LaSha's West Virginia Bistro in Teays Valley until it closed earlier this year.
Union says Whittaker LLC owes nearly $10,000 in unpaid natural gas utility service.
Union says the service was started on Aug. 28, 2006, for the property at 4170 W.Va. 34 in Hurricane. The service was terminated for non-payment on March 12, the complaint states.
The total amount owes for natural gas usage is $9,754.83.
Union, through attorney Courtlandt L. Smith, seeks that amount as well as pre- and post-judgment interests, court costs, attorney fees and other relief.
The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge O.C. "Hobby" Spaulding.
Whittaker won a then-record $314.9 million Powerball jackpot in December 2002. He opted for the lump-sum payout of $170 million, or about $93 million after taxes.
Earlier this year, Whittaker claimed a $10,000 Powerball prize after buying a ticket at a convenience store in Kenova. He was one number away from winning another $72.9 million jackpot.
