CHARLESTON - A Putnam County woman has filed a suit against a local hospital after she was injured when stepping into an elevator after visiting a friend.

Donna Gwinn filed the suit April 16 in Kanawha Circuit Court, against Charleston Area Medical Center and CAMC General. The suit also names Harmon Elevator Company as a defendant.

According to the suit, Gwinn was visiting a friend in CAMC on June 27, 2006. As she was leaving, she went to get on the elevator on the fifth floor. However, the elevator was misaligned when it stopped.

Gwinn entered the elevator and tripped, falling into the elevator and striking her head, neck, shoulder and back, the suit says. Gwinn received 14 stitches in her head, and has undergone extensive physical therapy, including being required to wear a back brace as a result of the ongoing pain and discomfort, the suit says.

In the two-count suit, Gwinn seeks compensatory damages from the defendants.

Attorney E. William Harvit is representing Gwinn. The case has been assigned to Judge Charles King.
