CHARLESTON - A Kanawha County couple has filed an asbestos suit against 85 companies, claiming the man contracted mesothelioma as a result of working around the deadly dusts for decades.

Vincent and Antoinette Scriptunas filed the suit June 13 in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Vincent Scriptunas worked at Union Carbide in South Charleston from 1951 to 1988. While there, he claims he was exposed to asbestos in various forms, which led him to become ill.

On June 20, 2007, Scriptunas was diagnosed with mesothelioma, an asbestos-related disease.

According to the suit, the companies are responsible for Scriptunas's illness, by failing to warn of the dangers associated with their products.

Scriptunas claims the mesothelioma caused him severe and disabling problems, which are permanent and will last his entire life.

Antoinette Scriptunas claims she has lost the services, society, companionship and consortium of her husband.

In the 11-count suit, the Scriptunas seek compensatory and punitive damages for their suffering and anguish, plus medical expenses and lost wages.

Attorney Thomas Patrick Maroney is representing the Scriptunas. A visiting judge will be assigned.
