CHARLESTON - A Hancock County woman has filed an asbestos suit against 69 companies on behalf of her late husband, who died from mesothelioma he contracted alleged asbestos exposure.

Lily Knotts filed the suit July 30 in Kanawha Circuit Court, on behalf of David Knotts, who died May 10, 2008 from malignant mesothelioma. He was 79.

David Knotts was employed by Weirton Steel from 1940 to 1993. During his tenure, he had various job titles, including fuel engineer. While working at Weirton Steel, Knotts was exposed to dust and asbestos fibers, which caused his mesothelioma.

According to the suit, Knotts' mesothelioma was diagnosed May 5, 2008. He died May 10 at Weirton Medical Center.

Lily Knotts claims the defendants knew of the dangers associated with asbestos but failed to warn their employees and instruct them in the proper protective precautions to take.

Lily Knotts claims she has suffered loss of general services, companionship and society from her husband for the rest of her life.

In the nine-count suit, Knotts seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Attorney Brian Alan Prim is representing Knotts. The case will be assigned to a visiting judge.
