CHARLESTON – A South Charleston couple says the wife was injured when she slipped and fell on wet stairs after Stanley Steemer had cleaned them.

Barbara and Doug Bastian filed their complaint in Kanawha Circuit Court against Stanley Steemer. The couple claims the company did not warn them about the dangers of wet stairs after their cleaning service. This resulted in severe injuries sustained by Barbara Bastian, according to the complaint.

The incident occurred August 10, 2023, when Stanley Steemer was hired to clean carpets and furniture at the plaintiffs' home in South Charleston. The complaint claims Stanley Steemer identified a need for Barbara Bastian to go up and down the recently cleaned and wet stairs but failed to warn her about the increased risk of slipping.

As a result of this negligence, Barbara Bastian suffered severe injuries which have resulted in medical expenses exceeding $200,000. The plaintiffs are seeking damages for past and future medical expenses, pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life and emotional distress.

The plaintiffs are being represented by David Fenwick and Robert Pruett of Goodwin & Goodwin in Charleston. The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Stephanie Abraham.
